"Neutral Milk Hotel was an American band formed by Jeff Mangum in Ruston, Louisiana, in 1989. They were active until 1998, and then from 2013 to 2015. The band's music featured a deliberately low-quality sound, influenced by indie rock and psychedelic folk. Mangum wrote surreal and opaque lyrics that covered a wide range of topics, including love, spirituality, nostalgia, sex, and loneliness. This album has perfect composition of song, and the opening two songs is a great example of that. The first part of King Of Carrot Flowers introduces the album and all the themes to come. In a way it is a way of expressing the spring months. Carrot flowers symbolizing something young and new. Themes of adolecence show up in the first line "when you were young". Themes of sex and intimacy imply birth and a sense of some sort of tender secrecy. We shift to themes of religion as we move to the second and third part of this song. With the lines "I love you Jesus Christ" sincerely sung out. It is an expression of unfiltered love. And despite the hipster culture that adopted this album, those lines were never ironic or tongue-in-cheek as some believe.

As the song picks up, we hear themes related to death rather than childhood. But it is presented in a chaotic sense of frenzy. Perhaps a symbol of re-birth, rather than death. After spring inevitably leaves, summer arrives. Which leads to...
